NHSC Support Letter Circulating in the House
Representatives Chris Stewart (R-UT) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC) are circulating a sign-on letter in the House asking the Energy & Commerce Committee to support continued funding for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) program. Funding for the program was last extended in 2015 and is set to expire October 1. Today, the Corps provides funding for more than 10,000 clinicians serving in shortage areas of the country. Millions of people in thousands of communities rely on the care they receive from NHSC providers, and without an extension before October 1, there will be no funding for the program.
We need every Member of Congress who supports the NHSC to sign the Stewart/Butterfield letter. The deadline for signing is Sept. 7, so we have the entire August break to convince as many Members of the House to sign as possible.
The future of the NHSC hangs in the balance.
Unless Congress acts, thousands of NHSC providers, facing a huge debt burden, will have little choice but to leave the areas of the country that need them most, in order to practice where they can make enough to pay off their student loans. Millions of people - insured and uninsured - will find themselves with no one in their communities to provide their health care.
Email and/or tweet your Representative today to let them know how important the NHSC is to your community and urge them to sign the Stewart/Butterfield letter today!
